NAN 611-02: Helium Ion Lab Rotation

The "Helium Ion" lab rotation actually covers three microscopes: the Helium Ion Microscope (HIM), the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). In this 6 week rotation, students will have the opportunity to learn about these instruments and have hands-on experience using them.

Two weeks will be spent on each instrument. Time will be spent guiding the students through proper use and handling and then each student will be able to operate the instrument independently (though with supervision).

At the end of each two-week section, one student (or one group of students) will present on a recent journal article that utilizes the microscope in order to achieve its central result. Class discussion will highlight the practical use of the instrument in current research.
